Auxiliary Battery Faults: Fix Ghost Electrical Errors & Voltage Issues

Solving Ghost Electrical Faults: The Role of the Auxiliary Backup Battery
The auxiliary battery malfunction warning on the dashboard usually indicates that the auxiliary battery cannot maintain the required voltage. The car still starts, so the driver often ignores the problem. However, other symptoms may soon appear. The electronic gear control begins to operate inaccurately, certain functions are briefly disabled, or several unrelated electrical system errors are registered simultaneously.
The main starter battery in this case may be completely suitable. The problem lies in the small 1.3 Ah auxiliary battery, which protects the more sensitive control units from a sudden voltage drop during starting.
Why does a small battery cause so many errors?
When starting the engine, the starter draws a lot of electricity for a brief period. The main battery's voltage decreases at this time, but the control units for the transmission and other important systems must continue to operate. This is what the auxiliary battery is used for.
When capacity is lost, the voltage becomes unstable. One control unit registers an error immediately, and the other only responds the next time the car is started. This is where the confusion arises. It seems to the driver that the gear control, electronics, and several comfort systems have started to fail at the same time, although the real cause may be a single small battery.
The most common symptoms:
- Warning about a malfunction of the auxiliary battery
- Inaccurate electronic gear control
- Errors that appear immediately after starting the engine
- Electronic functions disappearing for a short time
- Errors that disappear after restarting the car
When should the auxiliary battery be replaced?
If, during inspection, it is found that the small battery no longer holds a charge or that its voltage drops sharply under load, the part must be replaced. A suitable choice may be the BOSCH 0 092 S5A X10 Starter battery.
This is a compact 12 V AGM-type battery with a capacity of 1.3 Ah. It is not intended for starting the engine, but for providing stable auxiliary power. After replacing the worn part, voltage errors usually disappear, and control units dependent on auxiliary power begin to operate stably again.
However, sometimes a new battery discharges again after a few weeks. Then the problem is not in the battery itself.

Why is the main current relay important?
At the start, the auxiliary battery circuit must be properly connected and disconnected. This function is performed by a relay in certain systems. If its contacts are worn, the voltage is transmitted unevenly. One time, the system works normally, the next time, the auxiliary battery does not receive sufficient charge.
In this case, it is worth checking the BOSCH 0 986 332 002 Relay, main current. A new relay can help restore proper voltage separation during start-up and protect the replaced battery from repeated discharge.
The relay should not be replaced blindly. However, if the warning returns shortly after replacing the battery, checking it is a logical next step.
In diesel cars, the problem may begin with the heating system
A diesel engine is more difficult to start in cold weather, so a malfunctioning heating system greatly increases the load on the main battery. If the glow plugs are not turned on in time, the engine has to be cranked longer. The voltage drops. The auxiliary battery must compensate for larger fluctuations at that time.
If diagnostics show errors in the heating system, it is worth checking the BOSCH 0 281 003 039 Control unit, glow time. A faulty control unit may not properly control the glow plugs, leading to repeated voltage drops that eventually load the new auxiliary battery.
