Troubleshooting A/C Failures: Replacing the Magnetic Clutch to Restore Cold Air

If the air conditioner initially cools normally, and after a few minutes, warm air is already blowing into the cabin, you should not immediately replace the entire compressor. The malfunction may lie in its magnetic clutch. It turns on the compressor when the driver activates the air conditioning system.

How does the compressor clutch work?

The compressor pulley rotates together with the drive belt even when the air conditioner is turned off. The compressor is started only when the electromagnetic coil attracts the clutch plate. Then the pulley's movement is transmitted to the compressor shaft, and the necessary pressure begins to build in the system.

When the clutch wears out, the connection becomes uneven. It can engage briefly, then slip and disengage again. As a result, the cabin air sometimes cools, sometimes warms, even though the set temperature does not change.

If the compressor itself is not jammed, oil is not leaking from it, and there is no mechanical failure inside, it is not necessary to replace the entire unit.
