A/C Not Cooling? Fix Compressor Clutch & Restore Cold Air

Troubleshooting A/C Failures: Replacing the Magnetic Clutch to Restore Cold Air

If the air conditioner initially cools normally, and after a few minutes, warm air is already blowing into the cabin, you should not immediately replace the entire compressor. The malfunction may lie in its magnetic clutch. It turns on the compressor when the driver activates the air conditioning system.

A loud squeak from the engine compartment can also signal a malfunction of this part. Sometimes a scratching sound appears. The air conditioner only works when the engine is cold and turns off when the components heat up. Such behaviour is often associated with a weakened electromagnetic coil or a worn clutch surface.

How does the compressor clutch work?

The compressor pulley rotates together with the drive belt even when the air conditioner is turned off. The compressor is started only when the electromagnetic coil attracts the clutch plate. Then the pulley's movement is transmitted to the compressor shaft, and the necessary pressure begins to build in the system.

When the clutch wears out, the connection becomes uneven. It can engage briefly, then slip and disengage again. As a result, the cabin air sometimes cools, sometimes warms, even though the set temperature does not change.

If the compressor itself is not jammed, oil is not leaking from it, and there is no mechanical failure inside, it is not necessary to replace the entire unit. In this case, a MAXGEAR AC130022 Magnetic clutch, air conditioning compressor may be enough. The worn front part is replaced, and a serviceable compressor remains in the car.

Symptoms of a failing magnetic A/C compressor clutch:

  1. A/C cools at first, then blows warm air
  2. Loud squeaking when A/C is switched on
  3. Scratching or grinding sound near the compressor
  4. A/C works only while the engine is cold
  5. Compressor clutch engages and disengages repeatedly
  6. Cabin temperature changes without changing A/C settings

When should the entire compressor be replaced?

Replacing the magnetic clutch will not help if the compressor is damaged from the inside. It may be jammed, difficult to rotate or leaking oil through the main seals. In this case, the new clutch would be overloaded and would fail again quickly.

If an internal fault is detected during the inspection, a complete MAXGEAR AC330033 Compressor and air conditioning system is required. After such a repair, the air conditioning system must be properly drained and then refilled with the required amount of refrigerant.

The system's cleanliness is also important. A faulty compressor can sometimes release small metal particles that can remain in the pipes or other components. If they are not removed, the new unit may also be damaged. Replacing the part alone is then not enough.

Why is the drive belt also checked?

The drive belt rotates the air conditioning compressor pulley. If it has hardened or started to slip, the squeaking sound can be mistaken for a clutch failure. Sometimes both problems occur. The old clutch works unevenly, and a worn belt worsens its performance. While the compressor area is already accessible, it is worth checking the belt surface and tension. BOSCH 1 987 947 927 V-belt can be used when the old belt is cracked or has started to slip on the pulley.

If the air conditioner stops cooling after a few minutes, it is worth checking the magnetic clutch first. If the compressor rotates freely and is sealed, replacing the entire unit is not necessary. However, for a jammed or leaking compressor, a new clutch alone will not be enough.
